Partager la page

As part of its G7 Presidency, France is committed to accelerating a more environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive transition. It will focus on several key priorities: biodiversity financing, tackling desertification for security, Oocean conservation, strengthening resilience to natural hazardsextreme weather events, and safeguarding freshwater resources.

Since taking on the G7 Presidency on 1 January 2026, France aims to build a more balanced, sustainable and inclusive international order. The highlight of the French G7 Presidency will be the Summit of Heads of State and Government, which will take place in Evian, Haute-Savoie, from 15 to 17 June 2026.
The G7 Environment Ministers’ meeting, scheduled in Paris from 23 to 24 April, will address several environmental priorities to ensure fair and sustainable growth.

Priorities of the French G7 Presidency

France aims to (is committed to/is determined to) promote cooperation within the G7, particularly in five areas:

Financing Protecting biodiversity protecting
As G7 President, France (France or the French Government) is prompting the creation of a joint initiative bringing together private and public biodiversity funders (philanthropists, impact funds, companies, development agencies).

Tackling desertification for security
France seeks to open a dialogue among the G7 members on the link between desertification and security, particularly in the world’s most vulnerable countries/regions.

Ocean conservation
Following the 2025 UN Ocean Conference held in Nice in June, the G7 will take steps to build on this momentum, notably by strengthening cooperation on protecting marine ecosystems and on tackling illegal fishing.

Safeguarding fresh water resources
France intends to address emerging pollutants, including plastic and chemical pollution, such as PFAS, by deploying innovative solutions to eliminate pollution at its source, enhance water resource protection and improve water treatment.

Improving the real estate sector’s resilience
France is launching an initiative to strengthen prevention and make the real estate sector more resilient to natural disasters, as these risks can negatively affect property values and limit access to insurance.

The ministerial meeting will also serve as a platform for ministers to discuss key global challenges in 2026, notably the three COPs from the Rio conventions -climate change, protecting biodiversity and the environment, and reducing pollutions reduction-, the United Nations Water Conference, and the expected first BBNJ COP, and resume of negotiations for a legally binding treaty against plastic pollution.

Lastly, cutting methane emissions, especially in the fossil fuel and waste management sectors, will be one of the top priorities of France’s G7 Presidency, with a dedicated conference planned for 2026.
