As a result of climate change, extreme hazards will increase, become more frequent, and more powerful. This is why it is crucial to be fully aware of the good practices to avert these natural hazards and protect against them. Taking on board the good practices will ensure your safety and the safety of others. And bearing in mind that these good practices can be taught from a very young age, try and collect them in a fun way with the Risk Toolbox.
Teachers, educators, parents, you can use this tool to take a fun approach to raising awareness of the natural hazards that affect mainland France the most, which are heavy rain, flooding and wildfires.
Middle and high-school students, use this toolbox and get involved in ensuring your own safety!
What is the Risk Toolbox?
The Risk Toolbox was created by the Ministry of the Ecological Transition, Energy, Climate and Risk Prevention, to raise awareness among teenagers (aged 12 and over) of natural risks. It was created to address two of mainland France’s major natural hazards: rain and flooding and forest fires and wildfires.
The game creates an imaginary scenario for participants and they have 30 minutes to help a local councillor find solutions. Under the supervision of an activity leader, players have to collect the good practices to take on board in the event of a natural hazard, and help the local councillor protect the population.
The game is divided into 3 parts:
- solving 4 riddles to open the box;
- playing a number of cooperative games to uncover the good practices;
- a discussion on natural hazards and the good practices with the activity leader at the end of the game
The Risk Toolbox was introduced for the first edition of the “Resilient together in the face of risk - Get informed, take action, protect yourself” event on 13 October 2022, and has been used in several middle and high-school classes.

An educational tool available to everyone
The Risk Toolbox is available to download and print. The printable document includes everything you need to make the box, as well as an educational guide. There’s a video tutorial that explains how to use the box and instructions on how to conduct the activity. The idea is that teachers, teaching professionals and parents can access it anywhere, at any time and free of charge.

Rain and flooding
Rain and flooding is mainland France’s number 1 natural hazard. 1 in 4 French people are concerned by this. The area most at risk in mainland France is the Mediterranean, where intense rainfall occurs in the Cevennes region between August and December. French overseas territories are also at risk from intense rainfall and floods.
Forest fires and wildfires
Climate change is causing droughts and heatwaves to increase in both frequency and intensity in France. The vegetation is increasingly dry and vulnerable to fire. This means the slightest spark or ember is a potential danger and can result in flames. An unextinguished cigarette end, a still smouldering barbecue or a spark generated by DIY tools or fireworks can set light to grass or undergrowth. 9 out of 10 forest fires are caused by humans.
