French Civil Aviation Authority Environmental Report

Published on Wednesday 14 June 2023

Each year, the DGAC publishes its annual Environment Report, summarizing the actions taken by public authorities to reduce the environmental and climate footprint of air transport. The report has been enriched over the years, reflecting the growing efforts and results achieved in decarbonizing air transport and reducing its environmental impact.

The year 2022 confirms the recovery in air traffic that began in 2021 after the health crisis, as well as significant progress in addressing climate and environmental issues:

  • at international level, the 41st ICAO Assembly resulted in the adoption of a historic resolution: carbon neutrality by 2050 for international civil aviation as a long-term aspirational goal (LTAG), echoing the European and industry commitment affirmed, under the French presidency of the EU Council, in the Toulouse Declaration made during the Toulouse Aviation Summit held in February 2022;
  • at European Union level, negotiations on the "Fit for 55 package", which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030, have made significant progress that will accelerate the decarbonization of the aviation sector through : the increasing incorporation of sustainable aviation fuels, the electrification of ground-based equipment and the strengthening of the carbon price stemming from the gradual phase out of free allowances in the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU-ETS);
  • in France, increased support is being given to the three levers essential to achieving these objectives: developing the production of sustainable aviation fuels, research development and innovation with a view to producing a "low-carbon" French aircraft by 2030 and improving the environmental strategy of air navigation.

In this 2022 Environment Report, you will find a presentation of the progress made by the air transport sector in the field of ecological and energy transition, with concrete examples enabling:

  • the decarbonization of air transport and the sector's contribution to the fight against global warming;
  • reducing noise pollution;
  • improving air quality;
  • technological innovation;
  • protecting biodiversity;
  • greater consideration for climate and environment in the Ministry's day-to-day administrative action, as part of its SPE (Eco-responsible Public Service) policy.
